Vinyl Banner Buying Guide: Material, Finishing and Wind

Scrim, mesh or blockout? Pick the wrong banner material outdoors and the wind decides how long it lasts.

Vinyl Banner Buying Guide: Material, Finishing and Wind

Choose the material for the location

Three materials cover almost every job.

  • 13oz scrim vinyl — the all-purpose choice for indoor and short outdoor runs
  • Mesh vinyl — perforated so wind passes through; use it on fences and building faces
  • Blockout vinyl — opaque core so a double-sided print doesn't ghost through

Finishing is what keeps it hanging

Hemmed edges plus grommets every 24 inches is standard. On banners over 10 feet wide, add wind slits or step up to mesh. Pole pockets are cleaner than rope when the banner hangs from a crossbar.

Design at the right resolution

Build artwork at full size at 100 dpi, or at quarter scale at 300 dpi. Keep critical text at least two inches from the edge so grommets never punch through a letter.
